Laser Acupuncture in Wolverhampton and Bideford: A Gentle, Needle-Free Treatment
Laser acupuncture uses a gentle beam of light instead of needles to stimulate acupuncture points. If you are nervous of needles, or you have a sensitive area that needs a softer approach, it can be an excellent alternative. At New Beginnings Acupuncture, I offer laser acupuncture in Wolverhampton and in Bideford, North Devon.
What is laser acupuncture?
Laser acupuncture uses Low-Level Laser Therapy (LLLT), also known as photobiomodulation. A low-intensity laser delivers light energy to the skin over specific acupuncture points. The treatment is painless: you will only feel a slight warmth and a gentle touch on the skin.
How does laser acupuncture work?
The light energy is absorbed by the cells beneath the skin, where it is thought to boost cellular energy production, improve local circulation and reduce inflammation. In practice, this can support the body’s natural healing process and ease pain.
In Chinese medicine terms, the laser stimulates the same points I use in needle acupuncture, encouraging the free flow of Qi along the meridians. I can use it on its own, or alongside needle acupuncture in the same appointment.
What can laser acupuncture help with?
I commonly use laser acupuncture for:
Back and neck pain: muscle tension, stiffness and sore, sensitive areas.
Shoulder and knee pain: joint pain, tendon and ligament problems.
TMJ (jaw) pain: jaw tension and facial muscle pain, where a gentle, needle-free approach around the face is often preferred.
How is laser acupuncture performed?
1. Consultation. As with any treatment, we begin by talking through your symptoms and medical history, and I examine the affected area.
2. Safety. Both of us wear protective glasses during treatment, which is standard practice for all laser therapy.
3. Treatment. I hold a small, handheld laser probe against your skin over each chosen point for a short time, usually from several seconds to a couple of minutes per point. You may feel nothing at all, or a very mild sense of warmth.
4. Finishing. There is no recovery time and no needles to remove. Most people carry on with their day as normal, and I will let you know how many sessions are likely to help.
Is laser acupuncture right for me?
Laser acupuncture is a good option if you would prefer to avoid needles, if the area is too tender for needling, or if you simply want a gentler approach. If you are not sure whether needles or laser would suit you better, we can talk it through at your appointment. Please let me know about any medical conditions, medication or pregnancy beforehand, as laser is not suitable over certain areas or for certain conditions.
