Acupuncture for TMJ and Jaw Pain in Wolverhampton and Bideford
Jaw pain can affect everything from eating and talking to sleeping. If your jaw clicks, aches or feels tight, acupuncture may help ease the pain and tension in the muscles around the joint, without any needles in your face.
I treat patients with TMJ and jaw pain at Wednesfield Therapy Centre in Wolverhampton and Hive Health & Well-Being in Bideford, North Devon, including people whose symptoms have not improved with other treatments.
What is TMJ disorder?
The temporomandibular joint (TMJ) connects your lower jaw to your skull, just in front of each ear. TMJ disorder is a general term for pain and problems in this joint and the muscles that move it.
Common symptoms include:
Pain in the jaw, face or around the ear
Clicking, popping or grating when you open your mouth
A jaw that feels stiff, tight or locks
Difficulty opening your mouth fully, or pain when chewing
Headaches, especially around the temples
Tension in the neck and shoulders
Jaw pain often builds up over time. Clenching or grinding your teeth, particularly at night, stress, posture, an injury or long dental treatment can all put strain on the jaw muscles and joint.
How acupuncture may help TMJ and jaw pain
Much of the pain in TMJ disorder comes from tight, overworked jaw muscles. Acupuncture may help these muscles relax, improve circulation and reduce pain signals, which can make the jaw more comfortable and easier to move.
From a Traditional Chinese Medicine perspective, the jaw sits along meridians that run through the face, neck and shoulders and continue down the arms and legs. This is why acupuncture points far from the jaw can be used to treat it.
Why the needles don’t go in your face
Many people expect acupuncture for jaw pain to mean needles around the jaw. In fact, some of the most useful points for treating the face and jaw are on the arms and legs.
I use distal acupuncture, which means the needles are placed away from the painful area. Because the meridians connect these points with the jaw, treatment can reach the source of the pain without anything being placed on your face. From a modern perspective, stimulating these points may influence how the nervous system processes pain and help tense muscles relax.
This also means you can move your jaw freely during treatment, which is an important part of how I work.
How I treat TMJ and jaw pain
Consultation. Your first appointment starts with a conversation about your symptoms, when they started and what makes them better or worse. I will also check how your jaw opens and moves, and look at any tension in your neck and shoulders.
Treatment. I place very fine needles at points on your arms and legs. Once they are in place, I will ask you to gently open and close your mouth, or move your jaw from side to side. Many people notice a change in pain or movement during the session itself.
Neck and shoulders. Jaw pain often goes hand in hand with tension in the neck and shoulders, so I may treat these areas as well.
Laser acupuncture. If you would prefer to avoid needles altogether, laser acupuncture is a gentle, needle-free option.
You can read more about how a treatment works on my acupuncture page.
Working alongside your dentist
Acupuncture can be used alongside dental treatment, such as a night guard or splint. Many of the people I see with jaw pain have already tried these, and acupuncture offers a different approach that focuses on muscle tension and pain.

How many sessions will I need?
Every case is different. It depends on how long you have had symptoms and what is causing them. I will review your progress at each appointment and talk you through a suggested treatment plan, so you always know what to expect.
